אור אין סוף (Endless Light)
The boundless, primordial divine energy that existed before creation and fills all existence.

צמצום (Contraction)
A limiting of the infinite light of the Godhead in order to allow for a ‘space’ for the Four Worlds, or finite realms.

Sephirot
סְפִירוֹת (Emanations)
Emanations of divine energy bridging the infinite Creator with the finite, created world, acting as both “lights” (qualities) and “vessels” (limitations).
Ein Sof: The Infinite Divine Source
Ein Sof is intertwined within the concept of The Three Veils of the Infinite which describes the highest levels of Divine reality; a hidden source from which all worlds, souls, and creation emerges thus:

Ayin (אין) — “No-Thingness” or “Nothingness”
Ayin does not mean "nothing" in the ordinary sense. It refers to a state beyond existence and non-existence, beyond all categories that the human mind can grasp.
In Kabbalah, Ayin represents the unknowable source from which all reality ultimately emerges. It is not an empty void, but a transcendent mystery that cannot be described or defined.
Key idea: Reality arises from a source that is beyond all concepts and distinctions.
Ein Sof (אין סוף) — “The Infinite”
Ein Sof literally means "Without End."
This is the Infinite Divine Reality before any limitation, differentiation, or manifestation. Ein Sof is boundless, limitless, and beyond all attributes. Nothing can be said about it positively because any description would impose a limitation.
While Ayin emphasizes transcendence beyond being, Ein Sof emphasizes infinite, unbounded Divine existence.
Key idea: The limitless Divine beyond all form and definition.
Ein Sof Aur (אין סוף אור) — “The Infinite Light”
Ein Sof Aur means "Infinite Light."
This is the first expression or radiance of the Infinite. It is not separate from Ein Sof, but rather the Infinite as Divine Light before creation. Kabbalists describe this light as filling all reality prior to the process of Tzimtzum (the contraction or concealment that makes creation possible).
The Infinite Light is the source from which all spiritual worlds, the Ten Sephirot, and ultimately the universe emerge.
Key idea: The limitless Divine Light that precedes and sustains all creation.
The Infinite Divine Source of Ein Sof.
Ein Sof (אין סוף), a Hebrew phrase meaning "Endless", "Without End" or "Infinite," is one of the most profound concepts in Kabbalah. It refers to the boundless, eternal, and unknowable aspect of the Divine that transcends all creation, thought, and description.
Before the existence of the universe, before time and space, and beyond all attributes and forms, there is Ein Sof – the Infinite Reality from which all existence ultimately emerges.
To the Kabbalist, understanding Ein Sof is essential to a comprehension of the nature of God, creation, and humanity’s relationship to the Divine.
What Does Ein Sof Mean?
It expresses the idea that the Divine is infinite in every sense:
- Infinite in being.
- Infinite in power.
- Infinite in wisdom.
- Infinite in presence.
- Beyond all limitations and definitions.
Unlike most concepts of God, Kabbalah teaches that Ein Sof transcends every attribute, name, and description. Any attempt to define the Infinite inevitably imposes limits upon it.
Thus, Ein Sof represents the Divine as it exists beyond all manifestation and beyond human comprehension.
Why Is Ein Sof Considered Unknowable?
Kabbalists maintain that the finite mind cannot fully grasp the Infinite. Human language relies on distinctions, categories, and definitions, but Ein Sof exists beyond all distinctions.
It is for this reason, Kabbalistic texts often describe Ein Sof through what it is not rather than what it is. It is:
- Not limited.
- Not bounded by space.
- Not confined by time.
- Not subject to change.
- Not reducible to any image or concept.
This does not mean Ein Sof is absent or distant. Rather, it means the Divine essence exceeds all possible understanding while remaining the source of everything that exists.
Ein Sof and Creation
How can a finite universe emerge from an infinite Divine source?
This is a key conundrum of Kabbalah.
Kabbalists answer this through a series of mystical teachings that explain how the Infinite becomes manifest without ceasing to be Infinite.
According to these teachings, creation does not occur because Ein Sof changes. Instead, the Divine reveals itself through successive stages of emanation.
These emanations become known as the Sephirot, the channels through which Divine energy flows into creation as a bridge between the Infinite and the finite world.
