Adam HaRishon (אדם הראשון): First Man
The Collective Soul of Humanity
Adam HaRishon represents a vast, unified spiritual structure or collective soul that contained all of humanity. Every individual soul is considered a fragment of this original, singular Adam.
Adam HaRishon vs Adam Kadmon
Not to be confused with Adam Kadmon which is the ultimate divine architect/blueprint, while Adam HaRishon is the earthly reflection or manifestation of that divine concept.
Core Concepts:
The Collective Soul: In his primordial state, Adam HaRishon was completely unified, selfless, and driven entirely by a desire to bestow love. Within him, all human souls existed as a single, harmonious collective.
The Cosmic Shattering (Shevirat HaKeilim): Originally, Adam was meant to reflect the altruistic love of the Creator. However, an egoistic desire to consume pleasure purely for oneself caused a spiritual “shattering”. This primordial sin fractured the single soul of Adam into billions of individual, separated pieces.
The Ego: This breaking event is the root cause of all division, suffering, and selfishness in the world. Because Adam shattered, humans now perceive themselves as isolated biological entities rather than parts of a greater whole.
Tikkun Olam (Rectification): The ultimate purpose of creation is to repair this shattered state. In Kabbalah, spiritual development involves recognizing that our souls are interconnected. By actively transforming selfish, egoistic desires into mutual love and altruism, we gradually reconstruct the collective soul of Adam HaRishon.
