Ahavah (אהבה): Love
Love, Giving and Oneness
Ahavah, the Hebrew word for love, is deeply rooted in Kabbalistic thought as an active, giving force rather than a passive emotion, often associated with the sefirah of Chesed (loving-kindness). It is fundamentally linked to the concept of “giving” (havah) and represents the spiritual drive toward oneness, sharing the same numerical value (13) as the Hebrew word echad (“oneness”).
Aspects of Ahavah:
- Active Giving: In Jewish mysticism, ahavah is not just a feeling, but a deliberate action of giving of oneself, designed to mirror the Creator’s love.
- Oneness and Unity: Ahavah 1+5+2+5=13 (אהבה) and Echad 1+8+4=13 (אחד) share the same gematria, signifying that true love leads to the realization that all are one.
- Rooted in Chesed: Ahavah is the emotional energy behind the sphere of Chesed (loving-kindness) in the Tree of Life, representing boundless expansion and benevolence.
- Divine Connection: It is the spiritual state of yearning for connection with the Creator, enabling a person to go beyond their ego-driven, self-centered, and fearful nature.
- Actionable Love: Ahavah is developed by performing kind acts for others, which in turn fosters a deeper capacity for love, embodying the principle that one loves what one gives to.
