Birur (בירור): Refinement

See Good from Evil and Elevate Holy Sparks

Birur is a “clarification” or “sorting”) in Lurianic Kabbalah is the essential process of sifting through physical reality to separate good from evil and rescue and elevate divine sparks (nitzotzot) trapped within material things (kelipot). It is a vital part of Tikkun (cosmic rectification), elevating these sparks back to their divine source.

Aspects of Birur:

  • The Goal (Tikkun): The aim is to distinguish, refine, and elevate sparks of holiness scattered after the primordial “Shattering of the Vessels” (Shevirat HaKelim).
  • The Method: Through daily actions, specifically the observance of Mitzvot and using material items for holy purposes, individuals liberate these sparks.
  • Separation: It involves separating the “good” (divine energy) from the “evil” or mundane material (the kelipah or shell/husk), revealing divine unity.
  • Personal Application: On a personal level, it is the inner work of overcoming bad habits and refining one’s character, allowing for inner liberation and spiritual ascent. This process transforms chaos into structure and allows individuals to play a role in repairing the world.
