Lashon HaKodesh (לְשׁוֹן הַקֹּדֶשׁ): Holy Tongue

Sacred Langauge of Hebrew

‘And God said, let there be light, and there was light‘. God spoke the world into being. Lashon HaKodesh of Hebrew is not merely a method of communication. It is an intrinsic, divine building block of the universe. Kabbalists believe the language possesses literal supernatural properties; the 22 letters and their combinations are the spiritual energy God used to create the world.

Key Kabbalistic Concepts of Lashon HaKodesh

The Building Blocks of Creation: Unlike everyday languages, which are societal agreements, Lashon HaKodesh represents the true spiritual essence of objects. In the Kabbalistic text Sefer Yetzirah (Book of Formation), the world was formed through the permutations of these 22 sacred Hebrew letters.
Letters as Spiritual Vessels: The shapes, sounds, and numerical values (Gematria) of Hebrew letters are not arbitrary. Each letter acts as a channel for specific Divine energy. For example, in Kabbalah, the shape of a letter contains microscopic structural forces that interact with upper spiritual worlds.
The Name of God: The letters form the names of God, most notably the Tetragrammaton (YHVH). Kabbalists teach that meditating on, rearranging, and uttering these letter combinations can affect and elevate spiritual realms.
Permutations and Combinations: Mystics practice combining letters in various sequences to channel, invoke, and interact with the spiritual forces permeating the cosmos.

Why the Letters are Sacred

Intrinsic Meaning: Words in Lashon HaKodesh inherently possess the holiness of the object they define, bridging the physical and spiritual divide.
Vibrational Force: The oral pronunciation of the letters creates specific spiritual vibrations. This explains why prayer (Tefillah) and Torah study in their original Hebrew are given so much weight in Jewish mysticism.
