Naamah (נַעֲמָה): Pleasant
Demon: One of the four Queens of Lust
Naamah or Nahemoth is a demon described in the Zohar, a foundational work of Jewish mysticism. She originated from, and is often conflated with another Naamah, sister to Tubal-cain.
Naamah (or Nahemah) is a complex figure in Jewish mysticism and Kabbalah, often described as a “mother of demons” and one of the four Queens of Lust, alongside Lilith, Eisheth Zenunim, and Agrat Bat Mahlat. While appearing briefly in Genesis 4:22 as a mortal daughter of Lamech, she is later portrayed in the Zohar as a potent, seductive spirit and an “angel of prostitution” associated with divination.
Key Aspects of Naamah in Kabbalah
- Demonic Associations: Naamah is identified in Zoharistic Kabbalah as a succubus-type demon who causes nocturnal emissions and, together with Lilith, threatens infants.
- Four Mothers of Demons: Along with Lilith, Agrat, and Shehar, she is one of the four spirits who govern in the corners of the world, ruling in the dark hours from midnight onwards.
- Appearance in the Zohar: She is characterized as having immense beauty that entices both men and angels, such as the fallen angels Uzza and Azael.
- Relationship to Cain: As a daughter of Lamech, she is part of the lineage of Cain.Gnostic Kabbalah: In this tradition, she is called Nahemah and is considered the qliphah (negative shell or force) corresponding to the sephirah Malkuth, often associated with the material, lower world.
Conflicting Traditions
- Righteous Woman: Some Jewish commentaries suggest she was so named for her “pleasant” and righteous deeds (from na’am, meaning “pleasant”), speculating she was actually the wife of Noah, thus avoiding the curse of the flood, which contrasts heavily with her demonic reputation.
- Demonic Mother: Conversely, she is accused of seducing angelic beings and bringing about the “Plagues of Mankind”.Naamah’s character is fluid, representing a “mythological pivot” from a mortal woman of beauty to a divine/demonic force of sensuality, music, and divination.
