Torat HaShemittot VehaYovel (תּוֹרַת הַשְּׁמִיטּוֹת וְהַיּוֹבֵל)

The Law of Shabbat and the Jubilee

“Torat HaShem Ittot haYovel” blends a well-known verse from Psalms (19:8, Torat HaShem Temimah) with “the times of the Jubilee” (Ittot haYovel). Kabbalistically, and in the Zohar, it explores how specific “times” and cycles in history act as gateways to higher consciousness, bringing humanity closer to the Messianic era. Also in Sefer HaTemunah and the teachings of the Arizal, the 7-year cycle of the Shemittah is applied to the lifespan of the universe.

Key Concepts

Torat HaShem (The Torah of God): In Jewish mysticism, the Torah is not just a book of laws; it is seen as the living blueprint of the universe and the literal garment of God Himself.
Ittot haYovel (The Times of the Jubilee): The Jubilee (Yovel) year, which occurs every 50 years, is kabbalistically linked to the Sefirah (divine emanation) of Binah (understanding). It represents spiritual freedom, the return of all things to their divine root, and the ultimate restoration of creation.

After the 49,000 years, the cosmos undergoes a supreme Yovel. The universe is absorbed back into the divine source (often described as Ein Sof—the Endless/Infinity) only to emanate outward again, restarting the evolutionary cycle in an entirely new and higher dimension.

The Kabbalistic View: Esoteric texts, such as the Zohar, explore how specific “times” and cycles in history act as gateways to higher consciousness, bringing humanity closer to the Messianic era. Also in Sefer HaTemunah and the teachings of the Arizal, the 7-year cycle of the Shemittah is applied to the lifespan of the universe:
The 7,000-Year Days: Just as the week has six workdays and a Shabbat rest, the universe is often taught to pass through seven great “days” of 7,000 years each, totaling 49,000 years.
The Rest of the Seventh Millennium: During this time, the world returns to a state of spiritual disembodiment, serving as the ultimate World to Come (Olam HaBa).

How this connects to Jewish Teachings

The Baal Shem Tov: The teachings of the founder of Hasidism emphasize drawing the “light of the Torah” into everyday life to elevate the physical world, which paves the way for ultimate redemption.
The Ramban (Nahmanides): Renowned kabbalist and Torah commentator Nahmanides taught that the 7-day and 50-year cycles of the sabbatical (Shemitah) and Jubilee (Yovel) years conceal deep historical and cosmic cycles governing the universe.
