Din (דִּין) “Judgement” or “Law“.

Severity Synonymous with Gevurah

Din (judgment/severity) is a force synonymous with Gevurah and so limits the unlimited light of Chesed (mercy). It represents the divine attribute of limitation, restriction, and strict justice, primarily identified with the Sefirah of Gevurah on the Tree of Life. It balances the expansive kindness (Hesed) of God, acting as a “purging and cleansing force” that creates boundaries, discipline, and order in the universe.

Key Aspects of Din in Kabbalah:

Gevurah Relationship: Din is often used interchangeably with Gevurah, the fifth Sefirah (strength/judgment).
Function: It measures, restricts, and punishes where necessary, acting as a fire-like, critical, and awe-inspiring force (often associated with the Patriarch Isaac).
Root of Evil: When Din is too intense and not balanced by Hesed (Mercy), it can become harsh or, in extreme imbalances, lead to the potential for evil or destructive forces (Sitra Achra).
Connection to Intellectual Flow: Din acts as the restriction necessary for the transmission of intellect (mochin) into the physical, material world, ensuring the “flow” is managed appropriately.

Din (plural: Dinim) serves to create distinction and definition, enabling the world to exist by preventing divine, limitless, and unmanageable, unbounded energy.
