Machshava (מַחְשָׁבָה): Divine Thought
The Hidden Blueprint of Creation
Machshava it signifies the first divine “thought” or initial spark of creation, often tied to Chochmah (wisdom) and Atzilut (the World of Emanation). It represents the, “what” of creation arising from the divine, “why” (Ratzon or will).
Aspects of Machshava in Kabbalah
- Divine Emanation: Machshavah is the first articulate divine act, emerging from Keter (Crown) and Ratzon (Willing) to define what will exist, marking the beginning of differentiation.
- The World of Atzilut: The highest realm of existence (Atzilut) corresponds to divine thought, while subsequent stages are lower in the chain of creation.
- Transformation of Thought: The Ba’al Shem Tov famously taught that the letters of b’simcha (happiness) can be rearranged to form machshava (thought), highlighting that one’s state of being depends on their perspective and mental focus.
- Dual Nature: In Kabbalistic interpretation, machshava can be linked to either holiness (Mashiach) or the negative inclination (Nachash), depending on the focus of the mind.
- Action and Fruit: In Kabbalistic and traditional thought, good, focused thoughts are considered “fruit” that God connects with positive action.
