Ratzon (רצון): Desire
Divine “Will” “Desire,” or “Pleasure”
These act as the foundational impulse for creation, representing the deepest, often super-conscious, driving force of the soul. It is considered a metaphysical force that connects the creature to the Creator, stemming from the highest spiritual realm, Keter (the Crown).
Aspects of Ratzon:
- The Highest Attribute: Ratzon resides in the highest of the three heads of Keter, known as Reisha d’Arich (the extended head), representing pure, often irrational will.
- Two Types of Ratzon:
- Ratzon l’maalah mita’am v’da’at: A super-rational, transcendent will above intellectual understanding.
- Ratzon al pi ta’am v’da’at: A lower, conscious will that flows from rational understanding.
- Divine vs. Human Will: Human ratzon is a small spark of God’s greater flame of will, aimed at perfection and connection to the Divine.
- Et Ratzon (Time of Will): A mystical period, particularly Shabbat afternoon, when divine favor is easily accessible, allowing for spiritual ascension and the rectification of the soul.
Ratzon is not only a psychological desire but the fundamental substance that shapes reality. Developing a “proper” ratzon—aimed at connection rather than selfish receiving—is a core goal of Kabbalistic practice.
